Automatic lens

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A lens designed to stay at its maximum (full) aperture regardless of the working aperture set by the photographer, until the shutter is released. This allows for precise focusing and bright viewfinder visibility without affecting exposure metering. When the shutter is triggered, the lens automatically stops down to the chosen aperture for the correct exposure. This mechanism is also referred to as automatic aperture and is standard in many modern SLR and DSLR lenses.
