Back Light

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Lighting that comes from behind the subject, directed toward the camera. Also called backlit, this technique can create a silhouette, rim light, or halo effect, separating the subject from the background and adding depth or drama to an image. Backlighting is commonly used in portrait, landscape, and product photography to highlight contours and create a sense of dimensionality.
