Background density

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Refers to the density or darkness of the areas of a photographic negative or print that contain no image information. It indicates the amount of unwanted exposure or chemical fogging on the film or paper and is sometimes called the fog level. Controlling background density is important for achieving clean, high-contrast images, as excessive background density can reduce detail, lower image clarity, and affect the overall tonal range of the photograph.
