Backing

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A dim or colored layer applied to the back of photographic film-or occasionally placed between the emulsion and the base-designed to reduce halation, which is the unwanted reflection of light back through the emulsion that can cause a halo effect around bright areas. The backing dye typically disappears during film processing, leaving the final image unaffected while improving overall sharpness and contrast by preventing light scattering within the film.
