Black Point

SWPP Photographic Glossary

The black point of an image is the tonal level at which the darkest areas start to contain important detail. In digital photography, it's often measured and adjusted using a histogram, either on a camera's screen or within an image editing program. Setting the correct black point ensures that shadows are rich but not crushed, preserving texture and detail in dark areas. Proper black point adjustment is essential for accurate tonal balance, contrast, and professional-quality images in both digital capture and post-processing workflows.
