Bleaching out

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Bleaching out refers to the process during toning where the concentration of an image is gradually reduced. In traditional darkroom photography, this occurs when metallic silver in a print or negative is partially removed or lightened, often as part of toning techniques to achieve specific colour effects or adjust contrast. Controlled bleaching out allows photographers to fine-tune image density, enhance highlights, and create a desired aesthetic in both black-and-white and alternative photographic processes.
