Blocking out

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Blocking out is a darkroom technique where certain areas of a negative are painted with an opaque fluid on the non-emulsion side. These blocked areas prevent light from passing through during printing, causing them to appear white in the final image. Photographers use this method to remove unwanted details, enhance composition, or create artistic effects, making it a valuable tool in traditional film printing and fine art photography.
