Blue sensitive

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Blue sensitive refers to photographic materials that are responsive only to blue light. In traditional black-and-white photography, all silver halides are naturally sensitive to blue light, but early photographic emulsions lacked sensitivity to other colours, making them solely blue-sensitive. Understanding blue sensitivity is important in historical photographic processes, as it affects tonal rendering, contrast, and exposure, especially when photographing scenes with a range of colours.
