Bromoil

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Bromoil is a historic photographic printing process invented in 1907 that allows images to be created directly from bromide enlargements, eliminating the need for large internegatives. In this technique, the bromide print is bleached, leaving a faint image on the paper. The image is then developed by applying pigment with a brush, which adheres to the image areas, allowing for creative control over tone, texture, and colour. Bromoil printing is valued for its artistic flexibility, enabling photographers to produce unique, hand-crafted prints in any pigment colour, making it popular in fine art photography.
