Byte

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A byte is a standard unit of digital data storage, consisting of eight binary digits (bits). It is commonly used to measure file sizes in digital photography and computing, with one byte capable of representing 256 possible values (0–255). Larger file sizes are expressed in units such as kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB), and gigabytes (GB), where 1 kilobyte equals 1,024 bytes. Understanding bytes is essential for photographers managing image file sizes, storage capacity, and digital workflows, especially when working with high-resolution images and large file formats.
