Cable release

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A cable release is a flexible mechanical device that screws into a camera's shutter release button, allowing the photographer to trigger the shutter remotely without touching the camera. Many cable releases include a locking mechanism, enabling the shutter to remain open when using Bulb (B) mode for long exposures. This tool is especially useful for slow shutter speeds, long exposures, macro photography, and astrophotography, where even slight camera movement can cause blur or loss of sharpness. Using a cable release helps ensure maximum image stability and clarity.
