Camera lucida

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A camera lucida is an optical device that uses a lens and prism system to project a virtual image of a subject onto a drawing surface. Artists and early photographers could trace or study the image directly, aiding in accurate sketches and detailed studies before the advent of modern cameras. While largely historical, the camera lucida played an important role in scientific illustration, portraiture, and early photographic experiments, bridging the gap between manual drawing and photographic observation.
