Candle meter

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A candle meter, also referred to as a lux, is a unit of illumination that measures the amount of light falling on a surface. It is defined as the light received at a distance of one meter from a source of one international candle power. Candle meters are important in photography and cinematography for accurate light measurement, helping photographers determine proper exposure, lighting ratios, and scene brightness to achieve consistent and high-quality images.
