Carbro process

SWPP Photographic Glossary

The Carbro process is an early colour photographic printing method that evolved from the traditional carbon printing process. It uses pigmented gelatin layers to produce highly stable, richly toned colour prints, offering superior permanence and detail compared to many early colour methods. Popular in the early 20th century, the Carbro process was valued for its vivid colours and fine image quality, making it a favourite for commercial, artistic, and portrait photography before modern colour printing technologies became widespread.
