Carte

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A carte de visite is a small portrait photograph mounted on card, roughly the size of a modern postcard. Introduced in 1854, it quickly became a social phenomenon during the 1860s, with people exchanging and collecting them as personal mementos or visiting cards. Cartes de visite were widely used for portraits of family, friends, and notable figures, and they played an important role in the history of photographic portraiture and popular culture.
