Cartridge

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A cartridge is a pre-packaged, sealed container of photographic film designed for quick and convenient loading into a camera. Film cartridges protect the film from light exposure until it is ready to be used, ensuring safe handling and consistent results. The term is also commonly used for printer ink cartridges, which hold ink in separate, replaceable containers. In photography, film cartridges were essential for efficient shooting, especially in 35mm cameras, before the widespread adoption of digital imaging.
