Catchlight

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A catchlight is the small, bright reflection of a light source visible in a subject's eye in a photograph. It is often used in portrait photography to bring life and sparkle to the eyes, making subjects appear more engaging and expressive. Catchlights can be created naturally from sunlight or ambient light or artificially with studio lights, reflectors, or flash units, and their position, size, and shape can subtly influence the mood and impact of the portrait.
