CdS (Cadmium Sulfide)

SWPP Photographic Glossary

CdS, or cadmium sulfide, is a light-sensitive sensor cell commonly used in battery-powered handheld exposure meters. Its electrical resistance varies with the intensity of light, allowing the meter to measure exposure accurately. CdS cells were widely used in film photography to assist photographers in achieving correct exposure settings before the advent of modern digital light meters and electronic sensors.
