Centre-weighted metering

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Centre-weighted metering is one of the classic camera metering methods, where the camera evaluates light across most of the scene but gives greater emphasis to the central portion, particularly the lower central area. This technique is useful for portraits, still life, and controlled compositions, ensuring that the main subject receives proper exposure. In landscape photography, it's often recommended to angle the camera slightly downward, excluding the sky from the meter reading, to achieve more accurate exposure for the ground and foreground elements.
