CMOS Sensor (Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor)

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A CMOS sensor is a type of digital image sensor used in cameras as an alternative to the traditional CCD (Charge-Coupled Device). Modern CMOS sensors are just as stable and reliable as CCDs, but they offer several advantages, including higher pixel counts for greater image resolution, lower battery consumption, and reduced manufacturing costs. These sensors are widely used in digital cameras, DSLRs, mirrorless cameras, and smartphones, providing excellent performance for both still photography and video capture. CMOS technology has become the standard in contemporary digital imaging due to its efficiency, versatility, and affordability.
