Colour Fringing

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Colour fringing is a digital imaging problem, often seen in cameras with CCD or CMOS sensors, where random coloured pixels appear around the edges of high-contrast areas. Also known as chromatic aberration in optical terms, colour fringing can result in unwanted purple, green, or red outlines along the edges of subjects. It is particularly noticeable in detailed or high-contrast scenes. Photographers can reduce colour fringing through careful lens selection, stopping down the aperture, or correcting it in post-processing software, ensuring cleaner, sharper, and more professional-looking images.
