Colour Head

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A colour head is a component of a photographic enlarger that contains a set of three adjustable colour filters-cyan, magenta, and yellow-used to create colour prints from negatives or transparencies. By controlling the intensity of each filter, photographers can achieve accurate colour reproduction and correct unwanted colour casts. In addition to colour printing, a colour head can be used with variable contrast photographic paper to produce different paper grades, giving fine control over contrast and tonal range in black-and-white prints. Colour heads are essential tools for both colour and black-and-white darkroom printing, offering precision and versatility in the printmaking process.
