Completion

SWPP Photographic Glossary

In photographic development, completion refers to the stage at which all exposed silver halides have been fully reduced to metallic silver, and the image has reached its maximum density. At this point, further development will not increase the darkness or detail of the image. Achieving proper completion is crucial for consistent image quality, ensuring that negatives and prints have accurate tonal range, contrast, and detail. Photographers and lab technicians carefully monitor development times and conditions to reach completion without overdeveloping or underdeveloping the film.
