Databack

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A databack is a specialized replacement back for a camera that allows the photographer to imprint the date, time, and sometimes additional exposure information directly onto the film. This can appear on the film frame itself or in the film's rebate (edge). Databacks are particularly useful for photographers who need accurate records of when images were taken, such as in scientific, architectural, or documentary photography. Modern versions may also store digital metadata, helping photographers track and organise large collections of film images efficiently.
