Dense

SWPP Photographic Glossary

In photography, dense refers to areas of a negative or slide (transparency) that appear dark and allow very little light to pass through. High-density areas are typically the result of strong exposure or heavy development, producing rich, dark tones in the image. In printing or scanning, dense areas can require more light or adjustment to reveal detail. Understanding density is important for achieving balanced exposures, accurate tonal range, and high-quality prints in both film and digital workflows.
