Diffusion Enlarger

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A diffusion enlarger is a photographic enlarger designed to scatter light before it reaches the negative, ensuring the illumination is evenly distributed across the image. This soft, even light helps produce prints with smooth tonal transitions and reduced harsh shadows.

While diffusion enlargers create beautifully balanced prints, the image detail is generally not as sharp as that produced by a condenser enlarger. Photographers often choose diffusion enlargers for portrait and fine art printing, where subtle gradation and gentle contrast are more important than maximum sharpness.
