Dodging

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Dodging is a darkroom technique used in photographic printing to selectively reduce the exposure of specific areas on photographic paper. By blocking or partially shielding light during the enlarging process, the photographer can lighten certain parts of the image without affecting the overall exposure.

This method is essential for controlling contrast, preserving detail in highlights, and balancing the tonal range of a print. Dodging allows photographers to achieve a more nuanced, visually pleasing image, particularly in black-and-white photography, where careful manipulation of light and shadow can dramatically enhance the final result.
