DOS (Disk Operating System)

SWPP Photographic Glossary

DOS, or Disk Operating System, is an early operating system used on older personal computers. It provides a command-line interface for managing files, running programs, and controlling hardware, without the graphical interfaces common in modern operating systems.

While largely obsolete today, DOS played a crucial role in the development of PC software and early digital photography workflows, such as managing image files, scanning, and running early photo-editing programs. Understanding DOS is mainly of historical interest, but it remains relevant for working with vintage computer systems or legacy photographic equipment.
