Drum Scanner

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A drum scanner is a high-end, professional scanner used primarily by reprographic houses and commercial labs to digitize transparencies, negatives, and photographic prints. The original image is mounted on the surface of a rotating transparent drum, and a fine beam of transmitted or reflected light scans it with extreme precision.

Drum scanners are renowned for their exceptional resolution, colour accuracy, and tonal range, making them ideal for archival work, high-quality printing, and digital reproduction of fine art photography. Although very expensive and largely replaced by high-end flatbed scanners in many studios, drum scanners remain a benchmark for image quality in professional imaging workflows.
