Dye Destruction Process

SWPP Photographic Glossary

The dye destruction process is a photographic method for producing colour images in which fully formed dye layers within the photosensitive material are selectively bleached or removed. Unlike dye coupling, which builds the image by forming dyes during development, dye destruction starts with pre-existing dyes and modifies them to create the final image.

This process is used in high-quality colour reversal films, such as some professional slide films, producing rich, stable colours with excellent contrast and fine detail. Understanding dye destruction helps photographers and technicians appreciate how precise chemical control can influence colour fidelity and image quality.
