Dye Transfer Print

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A dye transfer print is a traditional method of producing high-quality colour photographs using three colour separation negatives-typically red, green, and blue. Each negative is used to create a positive matrix, which is then imbued with a corresponding subtractive primary dye (cyan, magenta, or yellow). The dyed matrices are carefully printed in register onto photographic paper to create the final colour image.

This process allows exceptional control over colour saturation, contrast, and tonal gradation, producing prints with rich, stable colours and archival longevity. Dye transfer printing was widely used in professional photography and fine art printing before modern colour printing methods became prevalent.
