Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS)

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Electronic Image Stabilization, commonly abbreviated as EIS, is a camera technology designed to reduce the effects of camera shake and motion blur in photos and videos. Unlike optical stabilization, which physically moves lens elements or the sensor, EIS works digitally by adjusting the image using software algorithms to compensate for small movements during shooting. This feature is particularly useful when shooting handheld in low light, recording video on the move, or using cameras without built-in optical stabilization.

EIS is widely used in mirrorless cameras, smartphones, and action cameras to produce smoother, sharper images and steady video footage. While it may slightly crop the image or reduce resolution due to digital processing, EIS allows photographers and videographers to achieve more professional-looking results without a tripod or gimbal. Combined with other stabilization technologies, EIS enhances overall image clarity and makes capturing high-quality shots in challenging conditions much easier.
