Emulation

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Emulation is the use of software to mimic the hardware or operating system of one computer on another, allowing programs designed for a different system to run seamlessly. In photography and digital imaging, emulation is often used on Apple Mac computers to run Windows-based applications, such as specific photo editing or workflow software that is not natively available for macOS. This enables photographers and creatives to access a wider range of tools without needing separate hardware.

Emulation works by translating commands and functions from the original system into a format the host computer can understand, providing nearly identical functionality. While there may be minor performance differences compared to running the software on its native platform, modern emulation solutions are highly efficient and practical. By using emulation, photographers can maintain a flexible workflow, combining the advantages of macOS with access to Windows-only photography applications and software.
