Emulsion Lift

SWPP Photographic Glossary

An emulsion lift is a photographic technique in which the thin, image-bearing layer of a Polaroid or instant film print is carefully separated from its original backing and transferred onto a new surface, such as fine art paper, acrylic, or another film support. This process allows photographers and artists to manipulate the image's appearance, creating unique textures, shapes, and visual effects that are not possible with standard prints. Emulsion lifts are often used in creative photography, mixed media art, and experimental projects.

The process requires precision and care, as the emulsion layer is delicate and can tear or warp if mishandled. Artists may choose different surfaces to enhance the visual impact or add depth and dimension to the transferred image. Emulsion lifts have gained popularity for their ability to transform instant photographs into one-of-a-kind artworks, bridging the gap between traditional photography and contemporary creative expression.
