Etching

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Etching is a photographic and printmaking process in which selected areas of a surface are dissolved away while the remaining portions are protected by a resistant coating. This technique allows artists and photographers to create detailed images, textures, or patterns by controlling which areas of the surface are exposed to the etching solution. In photography and printing, etching is often used to produce halftone plates on metal, such as copper or zinc, for reproducing images in books, newspapers, and artistic prints.

Beyond technical applications, etching is also a creative drawing medium, enabling precise and expressive designs that can be transferred onto paper or other substrates. The process requires skill and careful planning, as the depth and placement of the etched areas determine the final tonal range and visual impact. Understanding etching is valuable for photographers, printmakers, and artists who work with traditional image reproduction techniques or experimental artistic methods.
