Exif (Exchangeable Image File Format)

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Exif, or Exchangeable Image File Format, is a standard used to store metadata within image files, primarily JPEGs, to ensure consistent exchange of image data between cameras, computers, and software. Most digital cameras embed Exif data in every photo, recording important information such as the date and time of capture, camera settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO), resolution, white balance, and the amount of compression applied. This metadata helps photographers manage, organise, and reproduce their images accurately.

Exif is especially useful for post-processing, cataloguing, and troubleshooting, as it allows photographers to review the exact settings used for each shot. Software applications, including photo editors and digital asset management tools, can read and utilise Exif data to apply corrections, create automated workflows, and maintain consistent image quality. Understanding Exif is essential for modern digital photography, as it bridges the gap between hardware and software, giving photographers precise control over their workflow and image documentation.
