Expiry Date

SWPP Photographic Glossary

The expiry date on photographic film indicates the point at which the manufacturer can no longer guarantee that the film will perform to its published specifications, including speed (ISO rating) and contrast. Over time, the chemical properties of the film emulsion can degrade, potentially leading to reduced sensitivity, color shifts, or increased grain. Photographers rely on the expiry date to ensure consistent and predictable results, particularly for professional work where image quality is critical.

While expired film can still be used creatively, it often produces unpredictable effects that may be desirable for artistic experimentation but are less suitable for commercial or archival photography. Understanding and observing the expiry date helps photographers plan their shooting and storage practices, ensuring that film maintains optimal performance and that final images meet the desired standards of exposure, tonal quality, and detail.
