Exposure Bracketing

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Exposure bracketing is a photographic technique in which a series of images of the same scene are captured at different exposure settings to ensure that at least one image is correctly exposed. Photographers often vary the shutter speed, aperture, or ISO to create underexposed, correctly exposed, and overexposed versions of the shot. Many modern cameras offer an auto-bracketing mode, allowing multiple frames to be taken in rapid succession with varying exposures automatically.

Exposure bracketing is particularly useful in challenging lighting conditions, high-contrast scenes, or when shooting for HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography. It provides a safety net against incorrect exposure and allows photographers to blend images later to achieve optimal detail in both highlights and shadows. Mastery of this technique enhances consistency, accuracy, and creative control in a wide range of photographic situations.
