Ferrotype Process

SWPP Photographic Glossary

The ferrotype process is a photographic method for producing direct positive images on dark enameled metal plates, often made of tin. Also known as the "tintype," this technique creates a unique, one-of-a-kind image without the need for a negative. The photographic emulsion is applied directly to the metal plate, exposed in the camera, and then developed to produce a finished image that is durable and has a distinctive, high-contrast appearance.

Ferrotypes were popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries for portraiture and street photography due to their speed, affordability, and resilience. Understanding the ferrotype process is valuable for photographers interested in historical techniques, alternative processes, and hands-on experimentation, offering a tangible connection to the roots of photography and an opportunity to create visually striking images with a vintage aesthetic.
