Flat Gradation

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Flat gradation is a photographic term used to describe images that display low contrast, where the tonal range between highlights and shadows is minimal. Such images often appear muted or soft, lacking the visual punch of stronger contrast.

Flat gradation can occur naturally in certain lighting conditions, such as overcast days, or be created intentionally for artistic effect. Photographers may use flat gradation to emphasise subtle details, create a calm or understated mood, or prepare images for further processing in the darkroom or digital workflow. Understanding flat gradation helps photographers control tonal impact and achieve the desired visual style in their work.
