Fluorescence

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Fluorescence is a phenomenon in which certain substances emit a bright, neon-like glow when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. This glowing effect occurs as the material absorbs UV radiation and then re-emits it at a visible wavelength, creating a distinct luminescence.

In photography, fluorescence is often observed in subjects under UV lighting, such as certain fabrics, minerals, or paints. Understanding and controlling fluorescence can help photographers capture vibrant, accurate colours and creative lighting effects, whether in studio setups, scientific imaging, or artistic applications.
