Front Element Focusing

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Front element focusing is a lens focusing system in which only the front component of a compound lens moves forward or backward to achieve focus. The rear elements remain stationary while the front element adjusts the focal plane.

This focusing method is commonly used in compact and specialized lenses, offering a simpler and often lighter design. Understanding front element focusing is useful for photographers, as it can influence lens handling, focus speed, and potential changes in perspective or magnification when adjusting focus.
