Galvanography

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Galvanography is a photographic and printing technique in which a gelatin relief image is electroplated to produce a durable photomechanical printing plate. The process allows fine photographic details to be transferred onto a metal plate for high-quality reproduction.

This method was historically important in commercial printing and publishing, enabling photographers and printmakers to produce multiple copies of an image with consistent detail and tonal range. Understanding galvanography provides insight into traditional printing technologies and the evolution of photographic reproduction methods.
