Hot Spot

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A hot spot is an area of excessive brightness on a subject caused by the concentrated central beam of a floodlight, spotlight, or flash. It often appears as an unwanted bright patch that can distract from the overall composition and reduce image quality.

Photographers need to be aware of hot spots when using artificial lighting, as they can lead to uneven exposure and highlight unwanted details. Adjusting light placement, diffusion, or power can help minimise hot spots and create a more balanced, professional-looking photograph.
