Hypersensitizing

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Hypersensitizing is a process used to increase the light sensitivity of a photographic emulsion before exposure. This technique allows photographers to capture images in lower light conditions or to reduce exposure times, particularly when working with fine-grain or slow-speed films.

By hypersensitizing the emulsion, darkroom and traditional film photographers can achieve better detail in shadow areas and improve overall image quality. Understanding this method is valuable for experimental photography, night photography, and situations where precise control over film response is required.
