Hypo Eliminator

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A hypo eliminator is a chemical bath used in photographic processing to remove residual fixing agents, such as sodium thiosulphate, from film or paper emulsions. By clearing these traces, it helps prevent long-term deterioration and staining, ensuring the image remains stable and archival.

Using a hypo eliminator is especially important in traditional darkroom work, as it reduces washing times and improves overall print quality. Photographers benefit from incorporating this step into their workflow to protect both black-and-white and colour images from future fading or chemical damage.
