Magnetic Coating

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Magnetic coating refers to a thin, invisible layer applied to APS (Advanced Photo System) film that stores Information Exchange (IX) data without affecting image quality. This data can include the user's selected print format, date, time, and shooting conditions. Cameras and processing equipment can read this information to optimise print results, a process known as Print Quality Improvement (PQI).

Understanding magnetic coating is important for photographers and lab technicians working with APS film. It enables automated, high-quality printing and ensures that each image is reproduced accurately according to the photographer's original settings, improving workflow efficiency and final image consistency.
