Monobath

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A monobath is a single chemical solution that combines both the developer and fixer for processing black-and-white negatives. This all-in-one approach simplifies the darkroom workflow, allowing photographers to develop and fix film in one step, saving time and reducing the need for multiple chemicals.

While convenient, monobaths offer limited control over development, meaning photographers cannot fine-tune contrast or exposure as they could with separate developer and fixer baths. They are ideal for quick processing, educational settings, or situations where simplicity and speed are more important than precise image control.
