Panning

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Panning is a photographic technique used to capture moving subjects with a sense of motion. During exposure, the camera is swung in the same direction as the subjects movement. This results in a sharp subject against a blurred background, emphasising speed and motion.

Successful panning requires careful shutter speed selection and smooth camera movement to match the subjects pace. It is commonly used in sports, wildlife, and action photography to create dynamic, visually striking images that convey movement and energy.
