PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association)

SWPP Photographic Glossary

PCMCIA stands for Personal Computer Memory Card International Association. In photography, it refers to a type of card used in digital cameras to store images, which can then be transferred to a notebook or PC. These cards, also called PC cards, were commonly used in older laptops and cameras before the widespread adoption of modern memory cards like SD or CF.

PCMCIA cards allowed photographers to expand storage, quickly move images between devices, and back up important files. While largely replaced by newer technologies today, understanding PCMCIA is useful when working with legacy digital cameras and computer systems.
